From its founding in 1907 to today, the history of Yerington, Nevada and its Main Street is rich and deep. In fact, before the city received its current monicker it was known as both Pizen Switch and Greenfield, eventually finding the Yerington name it’s called now.
As the city evolved and grew, so did its Main Street. From the start, our main throughway has been full of thriving businesses with people and vehicles lining the street. From becoming the county seat in Lyon in 1911, to the spread of agriculture in the valley and decades of mining in the Anaconda Pit beginning in the 1950s, Yerington’s thriving community has been diverse and communal. In fact, those two industries are where we get our new nickname from, The Harvest Capital of the Copper Hills. A nod to our past, present and future, our nickname fully encompasses what drives our community and brings us notoriety and pride.
Enjoy this small trip through the history of Main Street, including the many businesses that have come, gone and remain as our city has grown and the times have changed. For instance, did you know the metal facade of Pioneer Crossings covers many historical business fronts that remain in tact? Next time you’re there or visiting Dini’s Lucky Club, pay attention to the columns and layouts of the buildings and you’ll find the 60 feet by 40 feet footprints of the businesses that used to call that stretch home.
